Step by Step Tutoring employs the Orton-Gillingham method, a research-based approach proven to be effective for students with dyslexia or struggling readers. Our personalized sessions ensure that every student gets exactly what they need out of each and every lesson.
Meet The Tutors
Kayla Nelson
As the founder of Step By Step Tutoring, Kayla brings years of hands-on experience in education. She has worked as a Special Education Aide, a Cross-Categorical (Special Education) teacher, and a reading/writing tutor, supporting students from first grade to college.
With a degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and training in the Orton-Gillingham approach, Kayla specializes in helping struggling readers build confidence and skills. She is passionate about literacy as a tool for independence and designs personalized lessons to foster a love of reading through engaging, multi-sensory techniques.
Kayla believes in a collaborative approach, emphasizing the importance of communication between teacher, student, and the home support system to ensure achieving the common goal of building confidence with reading.
Camryn Krebs
Camryn received her Bachelors of Science in Special Education from Eastern Illinois University in 2021 and she logged over 300 hours into in-classroom experience, spending the latter half of her college career conducting reading assessments for practicum and creating personalized reading goals and supports for her student caseload. Once graduated, Camryn spent 3 years teaching at a therapeutic day school, which helped propel for passion for individualized learning and whole-body learning. Here she supported her students academic goals, but recognized so much of learning capability comes from social-emotional readiness.
Students will not be able to learn if their needs are not met. Camryn firmly believes reading is a multi-sensory skill, as when we are reading, we are using our vision and sound primarily; but people often miss out on opportunities to further the understanding and the neural-connectors when touch is involved in the skill. This is especially helpful for readers with Dyslexia!
Put these two areas of focus together, and you have a reading tutor that will prioritize reading and the skills the student needs to develop, while also working on sensory and emotional regulation, which is an area that students with dyslexia also identify as a struggle. Camryn works hard to build repor with her students, so when they do get frustrated with a reading-related task, she knows what the two can do together to work through the moment of dysregulation and return to the task at hand.
